Apostrophe to an apprentice poet
Yes, you can write a sonnet if you try
Look how many William Shakespeare wrote
Get the metre right and words will fly
From fingers on the keyboard. Make a note
Of what you want to say the theme, the scope,
The listener to whom your work’s addressed
Allow your mind to wander, dream and hope
Pick words with care and choose the very best,
Write honestly with hope and faith and love
And though you may not match the famous Bard
You’ll write a sonnet. It will tower above
Your earlier works. It’s really not so hard.
All that you need is rhythm, luck and rhyme
Some bright ideas and lots and lots of time!
